Spirited remake "The Crazies" a certifiable hit
-Posted by: Quivi
A lesser-known entry in the George A. Romero living-dead oeuvre, 1973's "The Crazies" has been given the remake treatment to surprisingly satisfying effect.
Part zombie movie, part apocalyptic bioterror, part military conspiracy thriller, the refit hybrid doesn't stint on the visceral kicks demanded by contemporary audiences while remaining reasonably true to those Romero roots.
Given its menacing print marketing campaign (that floor-scraping pitchfork) and well-timed drop into an unsaturated marketplace, genre fans could really go nuts for the Overture Films release this weekend. ... Read More ...

Interview: The Crazies' Danielle Panabaker
-Posted by: Quivi
Danielle Panabaker - star of this year's Friday the 13th and the Kevin Costner serial killer thriller Mr. Brooks - is returning to the horror genre once again for The Crazies, directed by Breck Eisner. Joined by Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell and Joe Anderson, Panabaker faces not a masked maniac this time but a town of infected residents. Shock recently sat down with the actress on the Perry, Georgia set of The Crazies. For a full report click here.
Shock: With this string of horror films now, were you interested in horror before? Has this sparked your interest in that further?
Panabaker: It's absolutely sparked my interest and I think being a part of Friday and getting to know Brad and Andrew, I have just the highest regard for them. Brad and Andrew are good at this. I did a horror film with them for a reason, because they're so good at their job to understand what goes into it and to understand the formula of it was really fascinating for me. I'm still fairly young and new to the business. So, understanding all of the different aspects of filmmaking and what goes into it is fascinating to me, and understanding the different genres. I think this has a different feel to it than Friday did, we don't have Jason. There's an infectious disease essentially going around. It's really cool to me, I got to hang out a little bit with one of the producers who are involved in this film and just talking to them about why they got involved and the social commentary on being responsible with these biohazardous weapons. Horror films, yes, so I had never heard of George Romero prior to getting this script...I know, I know. [laughs] Yeah, I absolutely started with the Jason series and then with the Romero. ... The Crazies Danielle Panabaker Interview
-Posted by: Quivi
Danielle Panabaker oddly enjoys being terrorized for a living. Just last year we watched as Jason Voorhees tormented her and a group of unsuspecting teens in Friday the 13th and now she’ll have to outrun a terrible virus with the power to turn you into a psychopathic killer in The Crazies. The film is a remake of the 1973 George A. Romero original during which a top-secret government virus called Trixie accidently infects the water supply of Evans City, Pennsylvania. Breck Eisner’s reboot moves the action to a town called Ogden Marsh, where average citizens like Becca Darling (Panabaker) are subject to the horror of not knowing who maintains their sanity and who has been transformed into a murderous monster.
Check out what Panabaker told me working on The Crazies, her relationship with her sister Kay and plans to continue her horror career with John Carpenter’s The Ward.
SY: You’ve got a thing for horror remakes don’t you?
[Laughs] Well, it’s been really great to be able to work and keep working. So, yeah, I guess I’m the horror remake girl right now.
SY: What scares you more, a slasher wielding a giant machete or an insanity-inducing virus?
I really loved working on Friday the 13th and it certainly has an ionic horror character, but to me, The Crazies is actually a lot scarier. It has more of a thriller aspect – I was sitting on the edge of my seat. I feel like with Friday the 13th you know Jason’s coming to get the stupid teenagers, but with this film you don’t know where the crazies are and who’s really crazy and how crazy they are. I think that this was actually scarier for me to experience because even having read the script, I knew exactly what was coming but it was still really scary. ... Read More ...

Danielle Panabaker Talks The Crazies and John Carpenter's The Ward
-Posted by: Quivi
In anticipation of Overture’s release of The Crazies next week, Dread Central was given the opportunity to chat with one of the stars of the film, Danielle Panabaker.
In addition to The Crazies, recent genre work you may remember Panabaker from was the Friday the 13th redux that was released in early 2009. The young actress built up quite the resume before heading to Camp Crystal Lake, starring in films like Yours, Mine and Ours and Mr. Brooks as well as television work including “Shark” and “CSI.”
Panabaker discussed why right now horror is the best film genre to be working in.
“Working on three horror films in a row wasn’t a conscientious decision for me actually,” explained Panabaker. “Right now, though, the horror genre seems to have better movies coming out these days, and I just responded to these three scripts when I read them. There’s a great quality to horror films today, and it’s just a different feeling when you’re working on a horror set. It’s a great acting experience.” ... Read More ...
